  PRESCRIBED FIRE

Prescribed fire has the ability to be a highly effective and cost efficient way for landowners to improve range health, sculpt wildlife habitat and protect infrastructure. When fire is applied appropriately to the landscape dramatic changes in the ecosystem can often be seen in a relatively short time. Prescribed fire, however, is not a cure-all for every problem, nor can it fix all problems quickly. Llano Fire Management, Inc. can assist landowners in evaluating the usefulness of this tool on their property and produce, when appropriate, a holistic fire management plan for the landowner to follow in achieving his/her desired goal.

Fire Management Plans:
We believe that the use of fire in any form without a plan in place is not only dangerous for landowners, but also dangerous for effective land management. Llano Fire Management, Inc. provides comprehensive fire management plans that can be used for years to come with only minor changes needed through time. These written plans provide an overview of the property’s location and geographic setting. Fire management units are identified and mapped in conjunction with landowner desires. Each Fire Management Unit includes detailed descriptions of its soils, plants and hydrology along with relevant maps. Immediate outcomes are outlined along with long term goals set by the landowner. Weather parameters, areas of special concern, and necessary contacts are also outlined and mapped.
Llano Fire Management, Inc. encourages these Fire Management Units and plans to be integrated into the landowners’ current livestock or wildlife plans in order to most successfully manage the resources. If no management plans or strategies exist currently, Llano Fire Management, Inc. can assist in establishing natural resource management planning.

Prescribed Fire Implementation:
Once the appropriate planning has been accomplished, Llano Fire Management, Inc. can provide highly trained personnel and specialized equipment to conduct the prescribed fire safely and effectively. We take care of all the necessary contacts and permits required to ensure a hassle free fire. Nearly all of the personnel conducting the fire are licensed wildland firefighters certified through the National Wildfire Coordinating Group, with several years of wildland fire experience. Minimum impact techniques for fireline installation will be conducted as much as possible. These techniques include nighttime ignition, firing off game trails or existing roads, utilizing natural fuel breaks and wetlines.

Post Fire Evaluation:
A map of the area burned, along with discussions of fire effectiveness and notes for future improvement will be generated after the fire is complete. In many cases these actions will fall hand in hand with resource management planning already being conducted for the landowner.
